Nel 1633 due giovani gesuiti, Padre Rodrigues e Padre Garupe, rifiutano di credere alla notizia che il loro maestro spirituale, Padre Ferreira, partito per il Giappone con la missione di convertirne gli abitanti al cristianesimo, abbia commesso apostasia, ovvero abbia rinnegato la propria fede abbandonandola in modo definitivo.
