Lo sceriffo Bull Harper ha arrestato "Comanche" Todd, un uomo bianco che ha vissuto gran parte della sua vita tra gli indiani, poiché deve essere giudicato per l'omicidio di tre fratelli di Harper. I due viaggiano in una carovana guidata dal colonnello Normand. Il trattamento brutale di Harper nei confronti di Todd provoca attrito con alcuni membri della carovana. Quando lo sceriffo picchia un ragazzo che aveva dato a Todd una pipa da fumare, Todd approfitta della distrazione per uccidere il suo aguzzino con un'ascia. Poi, mentre alcuni dei giovani si allontanano gli Apache uccidono il resto della carovana rimasto al campo. Todd sopravvive miracolosamente. Spetta ora a Todd condurre i sei sopravvissuti verso la sicurezza, nonostante la diffidenza di alcuni di loro. Lungo la strada, lui e Jenny si innamorano.
