Quattro sorelle vivono la loro semplice vita intorno alla mamma con affetto scambievole. In particolare Jo trema sempre al pensiero che l'amore dovrà un giorno dividerle. E quando una di esse, Meg, si sposa ella si rattrista al punto da respingere l'amore proffertole da un giovane vicino di casa, Laurie. Per questo se ne va a New York a far l'istruttrice presso una famiglia dove conosce un simpatico professore straniero che ammira le novelle che lei scrive e stringe con lei la più affettuosa amicizia. Intanto Beth, un'altra sorella, muore ed Ami, la più piccola, sposa il giovane vicino che Jo aveva respinto. Questa allora, rimasta sola, vede finalmente sorriderle l'amore nella persona del professore che la sposa.
