Un addetto al luna park, appena licenziato dall'impresario, viene trovato morto nella gabbia di un gorilla. Proprio quel gorilla che è coinvolto in uno dei maggiori numeri dello spettacolo, visto che Laverne, giovane acrobata moglie dell'impresario, volteggia con il trapezio sulla sua gabbia senza protezione. I sospetti si concentrano inizialmente su uno studente che si guadagna da vivere facendo l'imbonitore.
