Accusato di aver stuprata ed uccisa una ragazza bianca, un giovane negro, James Lake, viene condannato all'ergastolo sulla base di alcuni indizi a lui sfavorevoli. Riuscito ad evadere dal carcere, benché braccato dalla polizia, egli inizia per proprio conto le indagini, alla ricerca del vero colpevole. Durante la fuga, James trova insperato aiuto e ospitalità da parte di un bianco, che però intende servirsi di lui come sicario per sbarazzarsi della consorte. Rivelata alla donna la diabolica macchinazione del marito, James la induce a collaborare alla ricerca delle prove della propria estraneità all'uccisione della ragazza. Individuato finalmente il responsabile nel patrigno della vittima ed ottenutane la confessione, James rientra in carcere, in attesa del processo che sancirà la sua completa innocenza.
