Sethe è la padrona della casa, una schiava fuggiasca che ha patito sofferenze indicibili tra cui l'impiccagione della madre e la perdita di alcuni figli. Nella casa abita anche Denver, figlia di Sethe, che è misteriosamente emarginata dalla società. A loro si unirà Paul D Garner , un pellegrino vecchia conoscenza di Sethe che deciderà di restare. Paul D era giunto lì per salutare Sethe e la "nonna Sue" morta però qualche anno prima, una specie di sciamana che organizzava riti collettivi vagamente tribali con i quali riusciva a controllare emotivamente i partecipanti. Anche Paul D ha particolari poteri e intuisce che la casa è abitata da qualche spirito. Questo spirito apparirà quando ad entrare nella casa sarà Beloved, una ragazza che apparentemente ha gravissimi problemi psicologici ma che rivelerà l'incarnazione di un passato mai passato e un presente di sovraumane presenze da sconfiggere.
