Jeremy Fox si presta a fare il tutore al giovane John, un orfano, ma Jeremy è anche il capo dei contrabbandieri del villaggio di Moonfleet e questo significa che anche per John, si spalancano le porte dell'illegalità. Tradita nei suoi sentimenti la donna di Jeremy fa la spia alla polizia che tende un agguato ai contrabbandieri dal quale Jeremy e John si salvano a stento. Un prezioso medaglione ritrovato cambia però il destino dei due. Uno dei capolavori del cinema d'avventura, e (nonostante sia tratto da un romanzo di John Meade Falkner) uno dei film più genuinamente "stevensoniani" mai realizzati. Un racconto d'avventura e di formazione, girato in un technicolor notturno e gotico, e in un formato (il Cinemascope) da cui Lang trae il meglio, pur odiandolo (serve solo a riprendere serpenti o funerali).
