Una regione desertica della California è teatro dell'insolito duello tra una pattuglia di extraterrestri e un umanoide armato di un fucile che spara raffiche laser. Gli alieni hanno la meglio, ma quando riprendono il volo con la loro nave spaziale, dimenticano di recuperare l'arma. Billy Duncan, un giovane squilibrato, durante uno dei suoi solitari vagabondaggi trova per caso il fucile e dopo averne sperimentato la potenza disintegratrice, decide di usarlo contro i propri nemici, quelli che da sempre lo hanno umiliato. Il ragazzo, quando manovra l'arma, è soggetto ad una sorta di mutazione nel fisico e nella personalità che lo trasforma in un essere capace soltanto di uccidere. Dopo le prime vittime, ben presto la furia distruttiva si indirizza contro tutto ciò che gli capita a tiro. La carneficina ha termine soltanto quando gli alieni vengono a recuperare l'arma smarrita: per tornare in possesso del loro fucile le creature non ci pensano due volte ad uccidere il ragazzo.
