Jimmy Hands, piccolo delinquente sfortunato, viene arrestato durante un goffo tentativo di rapinare una banca. In prigione entra a far parte dell'unità di Terapia Drammaturgica, diretta dall'avvenente Annabel Sweep. Facendo leva sulle velleità artistiche del direttore del carcere Graham Mortimer, Jimmy propone di mettere in scena con i galeotti l'orribile musical che Mortimer stesso ha nel cassetto, ispirato alla storia dell'ammiraglio Orazio Nelson.
