Il matrimonio di Julie e Roger Adams (Irene Dunne e Cary Grant) sembra ormai volgere al termine, ma la donna decide di ripercorrere la propria vicenda di coppia riascoltando vecchi dischi. Sul filo della memoria finirà per rievocare le tappe fondamentali della sua storia d'amore, dalla perdita dell'amata figlioletta alla possibilità di adottare un altro bambino... Il film del veterano George Stevens (Primo amore, Gunga Din, Il cavaliere della valle solitaria, Il gigante...), che qui viene presentato nella sua interezza con alcune sequenze che nella versione italiana erano state tagliate, riesce nella difficile impresa di conservare un miracoloso equilibrio tra le tante tonalità toccate con garbo e delicatezza, ben supportato da una coppia di attori di prim'ordine, tanto che Cary Grant ottenne per Ho sognato un angelo una delle sue due nomination agli Oscar.
