캘리포니아 대학의 젊은 지성 아담(Adam Gaines: 마이클 더글러스 분)은 학문과 현실에서 담담함과 부자유스러움을 느낀다. 자신에게 몰려드는 여자들에게도 싫증을 느낀 아담은 미주리의 한적한 시골에서 있은 삼촌의 장례식에 참석한 뒤, 여름을 그곳에서 보내기로 하고 전력 회사의 막노동꾼으로 취직한다. 때론 생명까지 위협하는 이 일에 오히려 희열을 느끼던 아담은 같은 회사에 있는 제리(Jerri Jo Hopper: 리 퍼셀 분)라는 처녀와 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 시간이 지나면서 아담은 또 다시 현실에서 도피처를 찾게 되고, 주변 사람들로부터 탈피하고자 방황을 계속한다.
