외딴 항구 도시에 청각 장애자의 학교 선생으로 부임해온 제임스리는, 열성적 교육으로 학교측과 학생으로부터 신임을 받게 된다. 그러던 중, 제임스는 자신의 껍질 속에서 벗어나길 한사코 거부하는, 청소원인 졸업생 사라를 만나 애정을 느끼게 된다. 수영장에서 신실한 침묵의 세계의 교감을 느낀 후 그것을 계기로 동거에 들어간 제임스와 사라는, 수화와 눈빛만으로도 충만된 생활을 보낸다. 그러나 말을 가르치려는 제임스의 노력에 반발한 사라는 집을 나와버린다. 그녀가 떠난 후에야 진정한 언어의 의미를 깨닫게 된 제임스는, 그녀를 찾아갔으나 정작의 만남은, 학생들을 위한 파티가 있던 밤에 이루어진다. 제임스와 사라의 새로운 사랑은 다시 타오른다.
