Inspirado num fato verídico, essa é a história de Henri Young (Kevin Bacon), um jovem que rouba 5 dólares para comprar comida para sua irmã menor e acaba preso e condenado. Seu destino é Alcatraz, cujo diretor, Milton Glenn ( Gary Oldman), sabe que tem poder para dominar cruelmente a vida de todos. Mas young resolve envolver-se em um fracassado plano de fuga, por isso, é mandado à solitária por três anos.
