V prosinci 1945 zemřel na následky tragické automobilové nehody na předměstí Manheimu. Předtím se však stačil stát nesmrtelným hrdinou 3. americké armády, která mimo jiné osvobodila také západ a jihozápad Čech, včetně města Plzně a Chebu. Rozmáchlé filmové vyprávění se však soustředí především na povahové rysy a soukromí tohoto velkého válečníka. Patton měl pověst ryzího a urputného velitele a bylo mu přezdíváno „Stará krev a odvaha“ nebo též „Krev a bláto“. Jeho velkou nevýhodou byla prudká povaha. Měl několik incidentů při návštěvě polních nemocnic, kdy zuřivě napadal „simulanty“. Přesto tváří v tvář smrti mohl bilancovat svůj život jako nadmíru úspěšný a navždy spjatý s vítězstvím v obou světových válkách.
