二次世界大战期间在华沙发生了一起非常轰动的命案,一名妓女被非常残忍的杀死。情报科的军官格劳少校负责调查此事,经目击证人的只言片语,他了解到这个及其残忍的性变态是一名纳粹将军。而当时在华沙的将军只有三个人,一位是已有家室、但喜欢沾花惹草的冯塞德利茨·盖布勒将军,一位是至今单身的克劳斯·卡伦勃格少将,第三位则是有洁癖、行为严谨的坦兹将军。三个人都不愿意配合调查,而且都没有不在场的证据。据说华沙在此之前曾经发生过非常相似的命案,而嫌疑人也是他们三个,但无奈战事所逼,调查起来有着种种困难。冯塞德利茨·盖布勒将军的夫人娜塔莉从德国赶到华沙,想要为女儿于丽克选择一位军官做如意郎君。而年轻有为的坦兹将军就成了她的首选。于丽克并不同意母亲的想法,在她看来,坦兹在战场上肯本就是杀人如麻的狂魔。为了让母亲死心,于丽克当众给坦兹难堪,和另一位年轻长官雷蒙德共舞,并与其坠入了爱河。格劳上校多次找到三位将军,但都碰壁而回。而此时,坦兹将军在华沙拿平民做实战演习,让格劳上校对他的残忍感到十分愤慨。虽然格劳上校凭感觉认定坦兹将军就是那个变态杀人凶手,但无奈没有证据,也无法实行逮捕。此时华沙的局势发生了变化,德军节节溃败,希特勒的去世让纳粹人心涣散,战争很快结束了。但对于发生在华沙的命案,格伦少校一直耿耿于怀。他下定决心一定要找出这个案件的真凶,于是,他与一名非常著名的法国探长一起重新调查此案,回报是从监狱里放走三名法国人。在两人的严密调查下,线索还是不甚明朗。此时,二人得到消息,坦兹将军将重返华沙参观博物馆。而当时最重要的证人也终于被找到,他就是当年于丽克的情人雷蒙德。目睹了杀人场面的雷蒙德当时侥幸逃走,一消失就是好几年,如今他终于说出了真相。而坦兹将军也面临着被军事法庭审判的后果。
