法老王兰塞(辣默色斯)下令杀死希伯来人男婴，但是摩西（梅瑟）却被母亲用篮子放在尼罗河中，因而被埃及皇室所救，后来摩西（梅瑟）被上帝呼召带领希伯来人离开埃及并进入迦南（客纳罕）──神所应许之地。 本片故事记载于圣经出埃及记（出穀记）。场面壮观，卡司坚强，由好莱坞一线演员担纲演出，其中饰演摩西（梅瑟）的班‧金斯利（Ben Kingsley）曾因「甘地」、「辛德勒的名单」获得奥斯卡金像奖之最佳男主角及最佳男配角。
