Anna Baker (Victoria Hamilton), die sich inzwischen von ihrem Ehemann Neil Baker getrennt hat und die Vergangenheit hinter sich lassen möchte, fängt unter dem neuen Namen Belle Stone in einer anderen Stadt noch einmal von vorne an. In einem Mehrfamilienhaus in Manchester baut sie sich als Pilates-Trainerin ihr neues Leben auf, als ihre 15-jährige chaotische Nichte Maya (Erin Kellyman) einen Überraschungsbesuch abstattet. Zu Belles neuen Nachbarn gehört das ältere Ehepaar Gail (Alison Steadman) mit ihrem Ehemann Henry (Peter Davison), die zu ihrem 70. Geburtstag ihr gesamtes Leben infrage stellt.
